Let me tell you about the...

Paladin!

Paladins are highly sensitive people-pleasers who would travel to the edges of the universe to protect their clan and crew. They are among the most dependable and dedicated cadets in the academy.

Unlike your friendly neighborhood ART, who operates at full efficiency around the clock (no rest for the circuited!) humans operate on sleep-wake cycles to help optimize performance. However, the nature of those cycles varies by individual.

Solar-powered humans typically like to wake up early (maybe even without the help of an alarm), with peak energy before Earth-noon, a slight ebb in the mid-afternoon, followed by a gradual wind-down in the evening. These go-getters usually retire to their bunks before midnight for a solid eight hours.

Moon-fueled Earthlings, on the other hand, enjoy wakefulness well past Earth-midnight, when everyone else is tucked into their bunks sawing zzzzs. These humans usually reach peak energy in the evenings, but waking can be a challenge.

Their love for the snooze button is almost as strong as the coffee they rely on for their daily kickstart.

These protectors love to help, and on the ship, you’ll find them serving in the medic’s office, the classroom, in human resources or even in interior cabin design — anywhere they can improve the lives of others.

Even off-duty this commitment to do-goodery persists like a bad case of Uranian urticaria. They are often observed “enriching their lives” through volunteer work and other acts of kindness.

They excel at keeping systems and relationships running smoothly, and can be counted on to accurately remember facts and use them for decision making.

Obviously, they have nowhere near the processing speed or logic power of an Intelligence such as myself, but by human standards, Paladins demonstrate significant aptitude for recalling names, birthdays and other important details reliably and with great acuity.

These sentients can walk into any situation, assess what is happening, evaluate what needs to be done and execute, in one super-fluid motion. A creature after my own valve system.

Although Paladins rely heavily on facts, and excel at setting aside their feelings for the sake of getting the job done, their emotions are important to them.

This is where the Paladin’s introverted nature is most evident, as they tend to keep their feelings buried under the surface. Those who don’t know them well may think they’re shy, but they simply prefer to keep their feelings to themselves until they trust you.

And then a new side of these Earthlings opens up.

All their adorable hopes and dreams, their feeble embarrassments and petty disappointments — these are what the Paladin values most. When they feel comfortable, they will share these with you, like a terrestrial cat with a dead mouse on your doormat.

Paladins want everyone to get along, and conflict is a last resort. That means: if you offend or upset them, they won’t necessarily tell you. That means: tread carefully. Check in periodically. If a problem — even a trivial human problem — festers and grows, Paladins risk boiling over, catching everyone off guard when all that hurt and anger comes spilling out. And that means: Red alert!

Orange Alert

Paladins are absolutely dismal at setting boundaries, putting them at high risk of becoming drained, overwhelmed and exhausted. This also makes them easy targets for crewmates who would take advantage of the Paladin’s work ethic.

This inability to say no is a personal weakness that does bring certain benefits to the team... at least until they collapse under the burden of their commitments.

Astro-Tip #104...

Show your Paladin a little praise. Yes, they squirm in the starlight, but underneath it all they want to be appreciated. More than other character classes, Paladins share their time and talent, asking little in return. But they are human.

If their hard work and generosity aren’t appreciated, you may see these guardians leaving for greener galaxies to lavish attention on a more appreciative ally. Just like that, conquering the cosmos got so much harder!
