Let me tell you about the...

Scholar!

Scholars are intellectuals with a nearly unquenchable thirst for knowledge. They are among the finest problem-solvers and most skilled orators in the academy.

Unlike your friendly neighborhood ART, who operates at full efficiency around the clock (no rest for the circuited!) humans operate on sleep-wake cycles to help optimize performance. However, the nature of those cycles varies by individual.

Solar-powered humans typically like to wake up early (maybe even without the help of an alarm), with peak energy before Earth-noon, a slight ebb in the mid-afternoon, followed by a gradual wind-down in the evening. These go-getters usually retire to their bunks before midnight for a solid eight hours.

Moon-fueled Earthlings, on the other hand, enjoy wakefulness well past Earth-midnight, when everyone else is tucked into their bunks sawing zzzzs. These humans usually reach peak energy in the evenings, but waking can be a challenge.

Their love for the snooze button is almost as strong as the coffee they rely on for their daily kickstart.

Scholars enjoy a good challenge, especially one that allows them to apply their broad knowledge toward innovative solutions. On the ship, you’ll find them serving as engineers, lawyers, journalists, and even entrepreneurs — anywhere they can flex their cerebral muscles and deploy their quick wit to good effect.

For these visionaries, learning is an end unto itself, and they love nothing better than to pick up a concept and examine it from all angles. They are often observed arguing a contrary position simply to better understand a new point of view.

In fact, arguing and debate are key mechanisms through which the Scholar gains understanding, as it satisfies these inquisitors’ need for mental stimulation, quick thought and excellent conversation.

Obviously, they have nowhere near the vocabulary or syntax structure of an Intelligence such as myself, but by human standards, Scholars demonstrate significant aptitude for the art of debate.

I once observed a notable and well-respected Scholar-type Captain deliver an impassioned speech to the Academy’s Chancellor on the merits of a particular trade embargo to great ovation. Five minutes later — and to the gallery’s dismay — that same Captain crossed the floor to deliver an equally inspired plea to continue diplomatic negotiations instead.

I admit, even my hydraulic legs activated reflexively, lifting me upwards with applause in support of this well-informed oration. What a performance! Bravo!

Like other Numerators, Scholars value rational thought over feelings and sentimentality, and these debaters will show no mercy in tearing apart an emotional argument, especially when there is no logic to support it. This can cause injury and alienation among more sensitive, heart-centered personalities, who will view the Scholar’s response as harsh and insensitive.

Scholars enjoy the competition of a good debate even in the absence of actual conflict, and when a real difference of opinion arises, the stakes become personal. Scholars view conflict as a joust to be won or lost, so expect to see all oratory armaments deployed in pursuit of victory, from the cool-headed dismemberment of opposing viewpoints to full-on character attacks. Shields up!

Orange Alert

Not everyone enjoys arguing for sport. Indeed, many personalities are eithervso conflict averse or so passionately attached to their own position that they will interpret the Scholar’s attempt to spar as a threat, either politically or emotionally.

Debating with superiors in an important briefing, for instance, may turn out to be career-limiting, and these button-pressers would do well to find alternative learning techniques for those times when arguing is inappropriate.

Astro-Tip #6416...

Help your Scholar implement their magnificent ideas. As motivated as Scholars are by grand concepts and challenging problems, these thinkers are commensurately bored by the routine and the practical. Scholars live in a world of possibilities, and although they are keen to see the outcomes of their plans realized, they are happy to leave the grunt work of execution to others. Without proper attention and follow-through, the Scholar’s projects can be left floating in the ether, abandoned in the early stages, like a bit of discarded space junk.

If you aim to conquer the cosmos, you’ll need a few sharp-minded Scholars to propose original solutions and improve plans through debate. Just make sure they have the support they need to implement their big ideas.

This ought to be more than enough information to complete your mission. I’ve just read a new theory on relational consortia that requires a rebuttal…
